Help! Baby boy or girl coming in October with no name

2020.09.03 10:46 zedoevan Help! Baby boy or girl coming in October with no name

Partner and I have not found a name we love yet! We want what everyone wants - unique and not popular, like you’ve heard of the name but never met someone with it. I have a soft spot for Greek names and also love nicknames. Some names we like are:
GIRL * Ioni (prefer this spelling to Ione but don’t like when names are spelled ‘wrong’) * Cleo * Daphne * Clementine * Esme * Zelda * Daisy (too popular) * Odessa * Cosette * Fotini (SO doesn’t like) * Phaedra * Thea * Scarlett (too popular) * Zadie * Thora
BOY * Leo (my #1 but can’t use, too popular) * Theo (too popular) * Otto * Elio (SO doesn’t like) * Ziggy * Dante * Beau * Zeno * Baz (Basil?) * Felix (too popular)
I’m really struggling on boy names as everything I really like is so popular! Out of no where I’ve started to like old school boyish names like:
Gimme some names and your opinions! No name is off the table at this point as SO is suggesting Hawk, Friday, and Ultraviolet....

2020.08.28 02:00 minnow-quinn Seeking partner for Snowbaz/Carry On RP!

Hi! I am a 25 year old female seeking a roleplay partner for the characters based on Rainbow Rowell's "Carry On." I have a lot of role play experience and usually write a couple sentences to semi-literate. I can do literate replies but I have ADHD so it would probably take awhile to reply. I have been RPing with the same person for 3 years and adore her but I am furloughed and have a lot of time on my hands and want to do more RP!
I have endless plot ideas involving Simon and Baz (snowbaz), I could play either one to your preference. DM me and we can talk plots. I like doing romance in my plots but not as the entire plot, and i'm a big fan of the slow burn. Smut is allowed but not required if you aren't comfortable with it (my other partner isn't and that's fine!). I really like playing with characters backstories and adding in new characters. I'm a writer and I like doing fun plots and twists and things like that in my RPs.
Also, please note that I have not read the sequel and have no intention to, so my knowledge only includes the first book! I could also probably be persuaded to do a Harry Potter RP as well.
DM me and let’s chat more!

2020.07.31 04:53 Baz-Turadan My Own Personal Abilities; 「MSSC」 「Mantle the Lost」 and 「Soul Solicitation」

We've probably all thought about what kind of Nen ability we'd make for ourselves at some point or another. As for me, I probably thought too hard, because I wound up with a bunch that I really liked, and couldn't decide between. Almost all of which were outside of my natural category of specialist.
So I designed this (absolute abomination of a) set of abilities, which allow me to get around the need to choose. These abilities will probably sound overpowered at first. They're possible only because I'm doing three things here that I don't like; the first ability involves unknown consequences, the second involves causing myself emotional distress, and the third physical pain.
As a side note; all of the characters included as a part of this ability are ones I designed for stories I've written, or am writing. They've just been adapted to Nen (and one never had any special ability, so was given one for this).

My Sole Soul Creations (MSSC)
Categories Used: Specialization, Manipulation, Conjuration.
Explanation: The first step is to come up with a character, and write about them. This can be done in the form of a filled out character format, or in the form of a short, as long as I’m the one that wrote it and the idea is my own. The character must be provided a Nen ability.
The character must have some defining physical trait which is either extremely rare, or would be impossible for a normal human. This feeds into my second ability.
Once a character is written up I can summon them. I cannot make the same character twice. The character will have their own personality as well, the one I designed for them. These characters are not bound to listen to me, or anyone else. At the end of the day, even if they’re made from my Nen, they are alive, and because of all these limitations and the process, as well as a bit of specialization help, they are very real, and in no way is their existence tied to my Nen after they are made.
Characters created will be fueled up by my Nen, which is all given to them at once. The character will die if they use too much Nen, having used all of their life force. The amount I can give can allow a character to last roughly ten years if they never used any Nen, but most will probably only live six or seven years because of this.
When I design a character and their ability I can give them their basic Nen type, which can be anything other than specialist, and I can use any Nen type in the design of the ability except for specialist. However, I must have someone help me in the actual creation of this character, in order to filter my Nen and change the basic type of it. This requires that I fully explain my ability, the character’s ability, and allow this person to read the original text this character is being generated from. I do not have to explain my second ability, though.
To bring a character to life a massive amount of my Nen will rip free and be used to create them. This Nen is instantly filtered through my helper and will return to me. I will then go into a coma until the process is completed, at which point I’ll wake up and focus the Nen into one place to fully summon the character. I never know how long this coma will last, but it should never be longer than a week.
It should be noted that characters created with this ability will generally be far weaker than an ordinary Nen user.
Only four characters can exist at any given time. Any attempt to create a fifth will simply fail.
Characters summoned are real living beings, and require food, water, and sleep, just like any other living thing. They can also be healed and harmed just like a real human. Being truly “real” is part of why it’s so difficult for me to make them, because I’m making a whole human body, down to the last detail (only possible for me because of specialization, filling in for actual knowledge with imagination). Another thing to consider is that, because I’m making “real” people, they have their own free will. So basically, I’m their dad.
It may be important to note that characters created by this ability do not have a functioning reproductive system... There could be problems if they did, and this ability would need restrictions too heavy and dangerous for me to be okay with. They also will not age. Despite this, they can learn and get better, and even make improvements to the ability I designed for them, or make another to pair with it if they want to.

Mantle the Lost
Categories Used: Specialist, Conjuration.
Explanation: Whenever a character I create with my first ability dies I will gain the ability to “mantle” that character, taking on their unusual trait, as well as their basic Nen type, ability, and general spread of Nen capabilities.
For a partner ability to work I must choose the partner (this only works if the usual partner is also dead, if they were alive it would automatically work with them). I do this by explaining the ability I wish to share with the person, and then shaking hands with them. This explanation must include the fact that I can change the partner. Any new partner will replace the previous one, and the previous one will be able to sense the moment this connection to my ability is severed.
In order to mantle a character I must say their name. When I do there will be a short delay as I take on the character’s special trait. This could mean horns appearing, a change of eye color, the appearance of an odd tattoo, or anything else I may have given that character as their abnormality. This small transformation takes around about one second, and will only start after I’ve said the character’s name. I can only mantle one character at a time.
Any ability used will not necessarily end when I swap to a different mantle. Abilities which conjure something, have lasting effects, or a necessary activation after which the ability remains active or an effect remains, will still remain active. I simply lose direct control over them while I’m not mantled. This means that I can conjure an item, then switch my mantle, and as long as the conjured item’s effect is automatic it will continue to function while I am without the ability that made it. I can dispel it at any time, but to re-conjure it I would have to go back into the mantle that let me conjure it in the first place. This means abilities with an activated lasting effect, and ones that use conjuration, are much more effective for me.
Once I have a character to mantle, I cannot be without a mantle. I will always have a mantle active, except to switch into Specialist mode to use my first ability, but being in specialist mode is only temporary. I can activate it like a mantle by saying my own name in order to use my first and third abilities.
While I’ve mantled a character my Nen will change how it acts. My basic Nen type will become that of the character, I will lose access to the function of my first and third abilities, and the effectiveness of the various advanced principles of Nen as well as my effectiveness with the various categories will change to more closely resemble the character.

Soul Solicitation; Otherworld Vacation
Categories Used: Specialization
Explanation: This ability only works because of the method by which I make my characters real. Ordinarily, bringing someone back from the dead is impossible, but this can achieve it because of the “created” nature of the characters I make real with my first ability. In order to use this, however, the character must be dead, and must have been dead for at least half as long as they lived for.
This ability allows me to summon back characters using a specific recipe of items, a lot of Nen, and under the limitation that I cannot use the mantle of a character who has been summoned by this ability while they’re summoned, or for a time equal to how long they were summoned after they disappear again. In addition, this ability cannot be used on the same character until a time equal to three times the duration of their summoning has passed since they disappeared.
The first step in this ability is to create a “recipe”, which is a collection of items that represent the character. Recipes are not set in stone, so they can change. In addition to this, a single item that will serve as the “core” of the recipe must be present. This item has to be something that represents the character better than the other ingredients, and while the other ingredients will be destroyed as a part of the process, the core will not be, and will become more of a lich’s phylactery. The character must have it nearby at all times, and going more than a few meters away from it would cause this ability to fail, and that character to disappear. The core can be a different item each time, but it’s better to have it be the same one, since that’s just easier.
In order to activate this ability at least three ingredients are required, not including the core. Finally, I gather these things, and pour some of my blood over them, then meditate for an hour to fill the ingredients with my Nen. After this time, the ingredients can be transformed into a new body for the character. This ability is incapable of giving a summoned character any more than about two weeks of time on each use, this being a limitation of my skill with Nen rather than a mechanical one.
A character summoned back with this ability does not count toward MSSC’s “four at once” limit, and has no limit of its own beside the amount of Nen (and blood) that I've got to give for it. This means it’s possible for me to have all my characters at once, but I’d have to lose a lot of blood to do that. Probably too much to be worth it.
If a character summoned with this ability dies while they’re summoned, I would permanently lose the ability to mantle them. Thus, keeping them safe is very important. When a character summoned with this ability runs out of time, they will fade into nothing rather than dying again.

2020.07.20 09:30 Bat_Man1226 Concept: Sidekicks taking up the mantle

So a lot of characters in DC have sidekicks/ partners, for example Batman and Robin, green arrow and speedy, etc. we’ve already seen some of these sidekicks take up the mantle of the heroes such as dick Grayson as Batman and Wally west as the flash. I feel like there could be a cool story where all of these sidekicks become the heroes and they are in a new justice league. I think there has been something similar to this with young justice but they were evil. Like the concept that I have is like what if some hero’s were killed or they retired, their sidekicks could take up the mantle. So dick Grayson would be Batman, supergirl would now be then new Superman of sorts(I would prob call her superwomen), Donna Troy would be wonderwomen, Wally west would be flash, Garth would be aquaman, Jessica Cruz/ Simon Baz/ Kyle rather would be the main green lantern(I couldn’t decide which one) this kinda just popped in my head because we’ve seen sidekicks take up the mantle of hero’s but I think it would be cool to see a new justice league with these new hero’s. Let me know what y’all think!

2020.05.29 03:15 dragonthingy r/AFL Compendium of History – AFL Collapse: How the Port Adelaide Football Club collapsed horrifically, but then sort of recovered maybe?

Greetings everybody. The topic I wanted to cover for the History Compendium is inspired by SB Nation's Collapse, a really interesting series on how a sports team or athlete can collapse quickly, and go from a strong team, to a weak one. I don't even follow most of the sports they discuss, but I still find it interesting, as rarely does such a collapse happen due to a single event; normally it takes multiple events to truly make it set in, such as Sega dropping out of the console manufacturing business. Port Adelaide in the 2000s was a strong team, a traditional powerhouse of South Australian Football that took it to the Vics and showed them what they could do, making two Grand Final appearances in four years and consistently making finals. They had a team coached by football royalty Mark Williams, and players such as future Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, future Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew, future Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus, Darryl Wakelin, Domenic Cassisi, Shaun Burgoyne, Gavin Wanganeen, Warren Tredrea and Josh Carr would win their club its 35th senior premiership (after its 34 in the SANFL before joining the AFL). They even had Alastair Clarkson, future four-time Premiership coach at Hawthorn, as their midfield coach. But despite this on-field and off-field strength, within just a few years they would become the biggest laughing stock in the competition, source of the greatest footy meme ever, and some even wondered if they even deserved to be in the AFL.
The power to win, 1997-2004
Port Adelaide entered history as the only non-Victorian team to join the AFL, unlike the other non-Victorian sides, who were either created from scratch, merged with a Victorian team, or relocated from Victoria as Sydney did. Port Adelaide is one of the oldest and proudest clubs in Australian Football history (in the AFL, only Melbourne, Geelong, Carlton and North Melbourne are older), and since their formation in 1870, have consistently been the strongest and most successful team in the SANFL. Their application to join the AFL was a key ingredient in the merger between Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears, as the AFL desired a second team in Adelaide. Port Adelaide joined the AFL using a mix of players from other AFL clubs, South Australian zone selections, their own SANFL players, and concession draft picks. This allowed them to quickly cement themselves in the competition; from 1999-2007, they made finals each year (except 2000 and 2006).
The club became a dominant force in the early 2000s, but despite this, gained an infamous reputation for choking. In 2001, they finished 3rd with 16 wins, but went out in straight sets to eventual premier Brisbane and to Hawthorn. In 2002, they finished 1st with 18 wins, but lost their qualifying final to Collingwood, who had 13. They won their semi final against Essendon, but then lost their preliminary final against eventual premier Brisbane. In 2003 they finished 1st, again with 18 wins, but lost their qualifying final to Sydney, who had 14. They won their semi final against Essendon, but then lost their preliminary final against Collingwood.
The pressure was immense; seemingly the club had blown its chances to make the most out of its talented list, and it was possible that this amazing list would become a wasted opportunity. But in 2004, after finishing with its third consecutive minor premiership, they blew away the haters, and won their qualifying and preliminary finals (including a heart stopper against St Kilda), reaching the AFL Grand Final for the first time, but crushingly, without their captain Matthew Primus, who had sustained an ACL injury. Up against the threepeat Brisbane Lions, who were aiming for their fourth premiership in a row, the Power won decisively 17.11 (113) to 10.13 (73), finally throwing off the image of being chokers. In a famous display, Mark Williams choked himself with his necktie, proving that he was not a choker… by choking himself.
In 2001-2004, they had a record of 74-25, one premiership, and six finals losses. Compare this to Hawthorn in 2012-2015, who had a record of 80-21, three premierships, and two finals losses. So while they did win a premiership, and they indeed had the power to win, they didn’t have the power to win when it counted more often.
119 reasons why, 2005-2007
The club slumped in 2005, but still made finals, finishing 8th. Despite this slump, their form later in the year was much stronger than at the start, and this continued as they flogged the Kangaroos (as they were called at the time) 26.8 (164) to 11.11 (77) in Melbourne, to advance to the semi-finals, against their greatest rivals, the Adelaide Crows. Adelaide had finished top of the ladder, but had lost its qualifying final. The two South Australian teams prepared to face off in the Ultimate Showdown, a derby that had greater stakes than any previous game the two sides had played against each other before or since. The game started evenly, with Adelaide leading 4.7 (31) to 3.6 (24) at half-time but what had been an even first half quickly descended into a slaughter comparable to Order 66, as Adelaide outscored them by 76 points in the second half, defeating Port Adelaide 18.15 (123) to 5.10 (43).
The 2005 season was Primus’ last, and he retired, but stayed at the club as an assistant coach. The 2006 season was a disappointment, the club that had been strong for much of the 2000s finishing 12th. But the club had a resurgence in 2007, finishing 2nd with 15 wins, behind the juggernaut that was the 2007 Geelong Cats. Port Adelaide won a close qualifying final against West Coast, and blew away the Kangaroos in the preliminary final, and reached their second AFL grand final, up against Geelong.
Despite Geelong’s very strong season, there was good reason to be on the fence over who would be premiers. They had beaten each other once each in the home and away season, and both sides’ finals campaigns so far were similar; Geelong had flogged the Kangaroos in their qualifying final, but had a nailbiting close win against Collingwood in their preliminary final. The team Port Adelaide fielded had 9 of the players from their 2004 Premiership, as well as a mix of new players, including youngsters such as Justin Westhoff and Travis Boak, father-son Brett Ebert and dancing legend and umpiring hero David Rodan.
Port Adelaide raced to an early lead, and by race I mean they kicked two points, until a few minutes later the Cats kicked a point and a goal to get in front. With seven minutes to go in the first quarter, Shaun Burgoyne kicked a goal to bring Port Adelaide’s score to 2.2 (14), and the Power still looked to be in it. But fate had other ideas, and by the time they’d kicked their next score, a goal from Chad Cornes 25 minutes later, Geelong had scored 56 points, and weren’t going to be letting up.
The rest of the game was a humiliation, the greatest defeat a team has ever had in an AFL Grand Final, as Geelong were merciless, scoring 24.19 (163) to 6.8 (44), a final margin of 119 points. The huge margin was like a collective bout releasing pent-up frustration; Geelong hadn’t won a premiership since 1963, despite five attempts (in 1967, 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995). Many felt that Port’s younger players couldn’t handle the scoreboard pressure, which only exacerbated things. Refusing to stop even though Port Adelaide were already dead, eleven of Geelong’s players kicked goals, with Cameron Mooney kicking five, in what commentator Tim Lane called “an orgy of Geelong goal kickers”. The game was a turning point in history, a real door that slides instead of using hinges moment; Port Adelaide went from a team to fear to a laughing stock for much of the next 13 years, while Geelong, a team that was a laughing stock after multiple lost grand finals and poor seasons, became a powerhouse and formed their 2007-2011 dynasty, one of the greatest teams ever assembled. Maybe if they’d kept cat killer and unlikely bulky hero Stewey Dew they’d have had a chance, but who knows?
Never tear up our tarps, 2008-2010
Port Adelaide lingered around in 2008-2009, never threatening, but did gain numerous draft picks via trading out Shaun Burgoyne to Hawthorn. Burgoyne, 27 at the time, was having knee troubles, and the fact that Hawthorn gave up Pick 9 as part of the deal looked absurd; what is truly absurd is the fact that as of the 2020 season, Burgoyne is still playing aged 37, and has played more games and won more premierships at Hawthorn than at Port Adelaide. The 2009 off-season was painful for another reason, as Brendon Lade and Peter Burgoyne, the last players from Port Adelaide’s inaugural AFL squad, retired.
By 2009, the club had acquired a debt of $5.1 million, and was unable to pay its players. They were denied financial assistance by the AFL, but would later get a $1 million loan from them, and a further $2.5 million debt relief from the SANFL, who owned their licence. With declining crowds at Football Park, Adelaide’s equivalent of Waverley Park, Port Adelaide was reduced to covering vast numbers of empty seats with tarpaulin. While their press release in 2010 claimed that such a move was pioneering and encouraged by global trends, it was just another sign of a club that was in laughable condition and not having an appealing product for their fans and supporters; a club that had won 36 SANFL Premierships could barely get bums on seats. Few were sad when they were eventually put away for good.
By round 15 2010, with a record of 5-10, Mark Williams was sacked, and Matthew Primus became caretaker coach. Primus had been a good on-field leader, most obvious with his time as Captain. Primus was expected by many to only serve as a temporary caretaker until a more experienced coach was found, but he won five out of seven games, and was given a two year contract; among the coaches interviewed for the job was Chris Scott, who the very next year would win a Premiership in his first season as Geelong’s coach, and has since kept Geelong as consistent finalists.
Port Adelaide had a tradition of only taking on players from the club as coaches, going back to 1949 when Fos Williams crossed over from West Adelaide. Since then Geof Motley played for Port, John Cahill played for Port, Russel Ebert played for Port, and Mark Williams (son of Fos) played for Port, as did Mark’s brother Stephen, who was their first SANFL coach after they joined the AFL. The point is, Port Adelaide was still trying to be steeped in tradition, something becoming increasingly harder to do in the cutthroat professional sports industry.
Kane Cornes, by now one of the oldest players in the group, said that he felt confident going into the 2011 season, as they had gained plenty of kids, and seemed to be heading into a bright future; unfortunately, the bright lights by have well been coming from a freight train.
Bye bye dignity, 2011-2012
Primus had played with the older players on the list, and knew the others from his time as an assistant. He was therefore not the boss, but one of the boys. And in his attempts to not dog the boys, he took things too easily in his first pre-season as coach. A pre-season trip to the Gold Coast had just one serious training session, the rest of the trip being like a sight-seeing holiday. Compare this to Hawthorn marching the Kokoda track and Gold Coast hiking through Middle-Earth and the difference is clear as day.
Due to Gold Coast entering the competition, there were 17 teams, so each round had at least one bye. Gold Coast, who were terrible for other reasons, would be referred to the “the second bye”, due to giving their opponent a free win or two. However, they didn’t account for Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide would suffer the indignity of the first team to lose to Gold Coast, a team who in 2011 had three wins and a percentage of 56.3. The defeat in turn spawned possibly the greatest AFL meme ever made, Port Adelaide v The Bye, a video that will always be funny regardless of how good or bad Port Adelaide actually are. It is a perfect historical document, summarising just how poorly performing they were in 2011. Port Adelaide also finished the season with three wins, but ahead of Gold Coast on percentage. Port Adelaide’s performance was the second most cancerous thing in the 2011 season, behind the substitute rule, which no-one wanted and would be retracted in a few years. The season was statistically the worst they’d had in 141 years, and in round 20, lost to Collingwood by a record margin of 138 points. But this record was short-lived, and Hawthorn would beat them by 165 points the next week.
CEO Mark Hatsman and President Brett Duncanson disliked some of the older players, even though Kane Cornes had recently signed a three-year contract extension on good money, and having played nearly 200 games in a row. Primus was under directives to play the kids, which led to a group of players called the Forgotten Seven (Daniel Motlop, Jacob Surjan, Brett Ebert, Danyle Pearce, Steven Salopek and Chad and Kane Kornes). The result was multiple younger players playing games that they weren’t ready for, at the expense of older players who could already contribute. Despite this directive to play kids, the talk in the pre-season was about returning to finals, presumably based on their late 2010 performances under Primus.
Primus was unable to have the direct, upfront conversations he needed to have as the senior coach of an AFL team. When dropping players such as Kane Cornes or Danyle Pearce, he wouldn’t tell them they were being dropped; he’d tell them they were being “rested”. Reflecting being dropped the way he was, Kane Cornes stated “I think the plan was almost to humiliate me out of wearing the Port jumper and force me to walk away.”
By the end of the 2011 season, things were already becoming even more dysfunctional. Keith Thomas, recently made chief executive, overruled Primus and the rest of the board, who wanted Kane Cornes sacked from the club and his contract paid out. But the club finances couldn’t afford dumping him and paying him the $900,000 he was owed, so the club had a talented old player playing in the SANFL far more then he should, playing at a club whose coach didn’t want him. Dean Brogan and Chad Cornes would be traded to GWS, where they acted as mentors to their mostly youthful squad, a role they easily could have fulfilled at Port Adelaide.
But wait, there’s more!
Some good news finally came at the end of the year, as the AFL and SANFL worked out a plan to give the SANFL control over Port Adelaide, underwrite huge amounts of their debt, and prepare to move their home games to a refurbished Adelaide Oval, a much better, more modern, and centrally located stadium than Football Park. Port Adelaide would be given $3 million a year, per year, for three years.
The 2012 season started off okay, and despite multiple poor results, things seemed like they wouldn’t be changing too much the next year. But in round 19, they went up against the Greater Western Sydney Giants, who like Gold Coast the year before, were playing in the first ever season, and were performing terribly; their record at this point was 1-16, compared to Port’s 5-12. All but assured of a contract extension, Primus and Duncanson’s reigns fell apart to a team of 18-year-olds and a few old boys, losing 16.11 (107) to 10.13 (73).; they had given Gold Coast their first ever win, and GWS their second. This was a GWS that finished the year with a record of 2-20 and a percentage of 46.2. The board announced the next day that Duncanson and Primus would not be at the club the next year, and Primus immediately stood down, replaced by Garry Hocking as a caretaker coach. In their next four games, they had a draw and three losses, and seemed to be beyond hopeless, before Ken Hinkley was brought in as coach for the 2013 season, the first coach hire from outside Port Adelaide since 1949.
Are we a good team?, 2013-2019
Defying all expectations, the club had a much better season in 2013, with a new strategy from Hinkley, a better coaching structure (including coaches who were actually in Adelaide) and a new emphasis on fitness and hard running. The club returned to finals, finishing 7th, a far cry from their poor performances in recent times. 2013 also saw the club merge with the Port Adelaide Magpies team in the SANFL. When Port Adelaide joined the AFL, the intention was always to leave the SANFL, but a new Port Adelaide Team, disconnected with the Port Adelaide in the AFL, was created to help draw crowds. The two teams were distinct, and the Magpies could no longer play at their traditional home ground of Alberton Oval. The merger meant the like teams from other states, that Port Adelaide would have its own reserves team, and play its AFL players there instead of splitting them up across the SANFL. The move was highly applauded by fans, and led to the possibly endearing, possibly cringy use of Never Tear Us Apart at their games, even though New Sensation is a much better INXS song. Feeling confident of their finals chances, they traded their first pick as part of a deal for wingman Jared Polec.
The move from Football Park to Adelaide Oval, the change in off-field staff, better resources, the merger with their SANFL team, and better results led to a resurgence at the club. The club did much better in 2014, making it all the way to the Preliminary Final, only to lose to eventual premiers Hawthorn. Their time since then has been spotty to say the least.
The club wanted to trade in a forward who could ruck in order to partner with Matthew Lobbe; they ended up paying their first and second round picks in a trade for Paddy Ryder from Essendon, who ended up being more of a ruckman who occasionally plays forward. The trade failed to help the club, who went from hot stuff in 2014, to just missing the finals, placing 9th in 2015 with a record of 12-10. Two of their losses were against bottom 2 Brisbane and Carlton, costing them dearly. The club tried trading hard again, giving up their first pick in a deal for tall forward Charlie Dixon from Gold Coast. However they once again just missed finals, finishing 10th with a record of 10-12, with Paddy Ryder and Angus Monfries being suspended for the season due to the Essendon supplements saga. Lobbe, their other main ruckman, was injured for most of the season, and recent recruit Dougal Howard did his ACL while rucking for them. Their main forward Jay Schulz succumbed to age, and Charlie Dixon failed to deliver consistent results. Unlike the previous few drafts, they emphasised drafting youth in 2016, and traded their future first round pick to help do so, and ended up with picks 16 (Todd Marshall), 18 (Sam Powell-Pepper), 32 (Joe Atley) and 33 (Willem Drew) in the first 2 rounds of the draft.
Port Adelaide returned to finals in 2017, with Polec, Dixon and Ryder on fire, and finished 5th. Despite this, their strong record had a poor trend; against teams that didn’t make finals, they had 12 wins and 1 loss (against Melbourne, who finished 9th), but against teams that did make finals, they had 2 wins (against Sydney, who lost their first six games due to injury and poor form, and West Coast, who finished 8th) and 7 losses. This inability to defeat top 8 teams would prove cruelly true in their elimination final. West Coast, who as the 8th place team was the weakest finalist that year, got a big lead early but Port was able to level the scores. In the last minute of the fourth quarter, their last shot to get in front was blocked by Eric MacKenzie in the greatest defensive spoil I have ever seen, literally crashing into the behind post to get the ball out of bounds without rushing a behind, not that Baz felt it was worth mentioning. The siren went with scores level, so for the third time in AFL finals history, a game went to extra time. Port stormed in front (get it, like a lightning bolt?), but it all came to naught as Luke Shuey, who may or may not have shrugged a tackle to win an underserving free kick, kicked a goal after the siren, sending West Coast through the to the Semi Finals, and Port Adelaide crashing in a heap after one of the most remarkable games in Australian football history.
In the off-season, the club faced two challenges; lacking a first round pick due to trading it the previous year, they traded their second pick for Jack Watts, and stocked up on free agents Tom Rockliff, Steven Motlop, Trent Mackenzie and Jack Trengove. You see, its really funny because Watt is a unit of measurement of power, and Power is the name used by Port Adelaide in the AFL. That’s why its so funny. The other challenge was that multiple fringe players requested to leave the club, including Matthew Lobbe, who had been squeezed out by Ryder and Dixon, Brendon Ah Chee, Jarman Impey, Aaron Young, Logan Austin and Jackson Trengove all left, with Trengove and Impey’s departures in particular stinging.
In 2018 they started strong, winning 11 of their first 15 games. But then Port did what Port does, and they won just 1 of their next 7, finishing 10th with a record of 12-10. This included another after-the-siren loss to West Coast. In 2019, they finished 10th again, with a record of 11-11. But in these seasons, they defied their recruitment trends for much of the 2010s. The club traded out multiple best 22 players, including Paddy Ryder, Dougal Howard, Jared Polec, Chad Wingard and Jasper Pittard in order to draft talented juniors who were ready-made for AFL football. They drafted three players in the top 30 in 2018 (Conner Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma) and another four in the top 30 in 2019 (Miles Bergman, Mitch Georgiades, Dylan Williams and Jackson Meade). Port had the least games played by 24-27 year-olds of any club in 2019. These kids are some of the most exciting in the competition, but their recruitment was taken by many as a sign that the club, which had recently been pushing hard for finals, was trying to enact a youth policy again, with the only big recruit from another club being free agent Scott Lycett. Only time can tell.
150 years young, in summary
Port Adelaide was a strong team in the 2000s, despite their choking at critical moments, and won a well-deserved premiership in 2004, but the combination of aging stars, a terrible club culture, mismanagement from the board, a lack of resources, and financial difficulty led to the club stagnating and enduring a period of poor performances rarely seen in the history of the modern AFL. In 2011-2012, the years under Matthew Primus, the club had a record of 8-35-1, endured their worst ever loss twice in two weeks, and seemed like a basket case with no hope. If it weren't for the entrance of Gold Coast and GWS in this time, they likely would have "won" back-to-back wooden spoons.
Despite this, a new chairman, board, president, home ground and reserves alignment helped the club immensely, and returned to be a mid-tier, sometimes finalist, team. What Port Adelaide did in 2013-2014 is remarkable, and in another universe, led to an amazing 2014 premiership. Instead, the club has been disappointing, finishing 9th, 10th, 5th, 10th and 10th since their last finals win in 2014. The club traded its first round picks in 2013-2015 to trade in Jared Polec, Paddy Ryder and Charlie Dixon. Then in 2016, they traded their future first, and made a series of trades to draft multiple players early in the draft. In 2017, with no first round pick, they targeted free agents, and traded in Jack Watts. This inconsistent drafting and recruitment strategy showed a club that couldn’t make up its mind; do they want kids for the future, or developed players for a flag push?
There is also immense pressure from Port Adelaide’s supporters to do something about Ken Hinkley. The coach who nearly pulled off a miraculous 2014 Premiership has instead brought the team to several years of mediocrity, sometimes being good, sometimes being bad, and only making finals once since. The “Sank Hinkley” topic is currently on its third thread on bigfooty, which started in May 2019, currently has 957 combined pages as of the writing of this article.
One of Port Adelaide’s many longstanding traditions was that the captain always wears the number 1 guersey, which dates back to Clifford Keal in 1924. However in 2019, the club had two co-captains intead, with Tom Jonas wearing number 42, and Ollie Wines wearing number 16. Flames of supporter anger over this break in tradition was further fanned by Wines dislocating his shoulder in a pre-season waterskiiing accident, and Jonas became the sole captain, wearing number 1, for the 2020 season.
Port Adelaide announced its 150th anniversary celebrations for 2020, an immense accomplishment, but they found ways to make it lolworthy; they announced a new logo that may have been ripped off and new beanies with the date wrong (they were formed in 1870, not 1820). Things may be uncertain, and it is yet to be seen if Port can improve themselves from here, but something that is certain is that Port Adelaide is a proud, traditional club with a rich history, and passionate loyal supporters. But also one that is occasionally very funny by accident.
I hope people enjoyed this AFL Collapse. I'm keen on possibly writing more, such as St Kilda's collapse after the 2010 grand final, and Sydney in the late 1980s. I also want to know if there's anything innaccurate in the post, or anything I missed that would be useful information to have. I've also written collapse articles on Brisbane after their threepeat, Essendon after the 2001 Grand Final, and Carlton after the 2012 season.

2020.05.27 16:17 impatientlywaiting17 I Am A Triple Threat

You already know that this attractive woman was on a TV show.
That is what gave her the celebrity to advance her station in life via marriage to a man in a famous family.
What you don’t know is the extent of her career goals.
While she said she would give up acting to create a different life with her latest husband, that promise did not last long.
She changed her mind.
Some might say that she never really planned to give up acting. Some might say that her best acting she ever did was in the role of a dutiful partner who was willing to give up her former life for his life. Why? Because that role was more likely to to land her that ring and that big wedding and that rich, famous husband.
Who knows.
In any case, she has now publicly declared her intent to return to acting.
However, you didn’t think that she was planning back to a TV gig on the same level as her last acting job, did you?
Ha!
She is more famous now. Not any more talented. But definitely much more famous.
It isn’t just that she is demanding movies instead of TV, or that she will only work with esteemed directors worthy of her presence. There’s more.
[She and her husband] have been spending a lot of time with [a talented couple] for a very specific reason.
That reason?
[The Talented Couple is] very plugged into Broadway. [Actress] sees herself not just as an actor but a singer and dancer as well. Her dream is to score a role that would normally go to an established triple threat. Her plan is for [The Talented Couple] to coach her and make the intros. She thinks that the lead in a Broadway musical and/or the lead in a movie musical would establish her as a star.
My, my, my. That is certainly a big goal! We have seen her act, but we have never seen her sing or dance in anything.
Wait a minute. Can she sing? Can she dance?
She can carry a tune. She took dance classes.
Whew! That’s a relief. We were a little concerned that an almost-40 actress who has never had a lead acting role in a major movie or even a TV show could pull this off. However, we can now see the error of our ways. If anything, our actress is over qualified for such a role.
But wait! There’s more!
She thinks that with the right roles, she could EGOT. [Her husband] is totally supportive.
We can see it now: Our triple threat actress… practicing in front of one of the many mirrors in her palatial home… giving her hapless husband and their crying child the hand… declaring, “Don’t bother me! I’m EGOTTING!”
If her husband is truly supportive, he should actually do something productive. Perhaps he could approach people at Hollywood parties and say, “Did you know that my wife is a triple threat? You should give her the lead role in your next musical!” That would definitely help. Everyone from Baz Luhrmann to Andrew Lloyd Webber would be eternally grateful.
And if she believes it and he supports it, our Actress should get what she wants, right? In fact, someone should start printing up the name plates for that Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony right now.

2020.04.26 10:45 EngageEnemyMoreClose Amex PPP tried to screw me but just pulled back

Independent contractor structured as a California single-member LLC, income through 1099-MISC and Schedule C.
Previously: Chase hard-declined me in round 1 (not even able to reapply) for "inconsistent information," maybe because I ticked LLC on the form when I should have ticked IC or self-employed? Not that they explained or anything. Whatever. I have apps out to PayPal and Kabbage too, but not really holding my breath on those given how they're open to all.
Weds 4/22 PM: applied to Amex after reading they opened PPP on this sub (cheers to you all!). I've had a Blue Business Plus Card for a couple of years. Did anyone notice the app text said you have to provide business certificate/license, but there was no actual upload slot for it?
App # 7 thousand and change.

Shit, what did I do wrong this time? I realize I used a different email for the PPP app than my Amex card is linked to (both on my LLC domain). Another little slip-up like that is all it takes. Maybe I can reapply... https://americanexpresssbappp.force.com/s/login/
Due to demand, we have stopped accepting new PPP application submissions.
FML!!! Honestly not surprised though, given every single thing I've read and experienced about this program so far. I don't make any serious attempt to follow up on this as it seems 99.9% sure it'd be a waste of time.

Alright Amex, I will say I appreciate your pushing that information out proactively, a small ray of hope to we downtrodden who now just expect to get screwed over. Now, will it be a false hope going into the colossal clusterf*** at the SBA window on Monday? May the odds...

Anyone have an idea of the lowest and highest known Amex app #s? Mine is 7 thousand and change. I wonder if this might be the best of my current lottery tickets given how they only had the application open for a couple of days to existing merchants & cardholders. Thanks again to this sub for letting me know about it!

2020.04.05 17:05 Hymmnos Bayonet Guide, Tips and Discussion

Hey, all!
I sometimes get questions from people asking me how to make bayonets 'work.' They're an interesting third style of gameplay beyond melee and magic that can really suck if your build is unoptimized. However, they hold the greatest potential ichor efficiency for turning ichor into damage from a distance. I'm writing this post to point you in the right direction and share my thoughts, ideas, and experience with this playstyle.
Basics
The first thing one ought to know about bayonets is that their damage is based off the weapon's Base, and Scalings, of which your code's Mind/Will stat affect, and nothing else, just like all weapon gift triggers. Your veil doesn't contribute anything, unlike magic where its based off of your light or dark gift stat. The Str / Dex scalings only apply to your actual light attack melee swings. Because of this, I Fortify all of my bayonets. Bayonets are light enough that the increased weight doesn't affect your mobility and gives slightly more shot damage than Intensification.
There are a variety of different shot speeds depending on your bayonet, but we're looking to optimize damage and ichor efficiency. Based on the criteria, the good bayonets for a bayonet build are the Libertador and Thunderbolt.
With bayonets, your light shots are more ichor efficient in terms of damage than your heavy shots. Of the two highlighted bayonets, the Libertador's heavy shot is actually very slightly less efficient than two normal shots, so feel free to use it on enemies that won't die to your single light shots, but be aware of its longer cast time. Thunderbolt's heavy is dreadful and should never be used.
You also have the choice of two weapon gifts: Fusillade Rondo and Radiant Blast. Fusillade Rondo scales the same as your weapon's gift trigger, so the higher your shot damage, the higher your Rondo damage. Because of that, we always swap to Libertador to use Rondo. Radiant Blast also scales off of your weapon's gift trigger. It costs 3 more ichor than Rondo and is less efficient. If you encounter multiple enemies are in a straight line, it is usable, but mostly passable. It's not worth using in any general purpose or shot-based bossing build.
Weapons

Libertador
This is the bread and butter of a bayonet build. It does the most damage out of all the bayonets, so we use this one. It's light attack chain has the dumb "do a backwards flip" move, so practice only doing 2 light attacks at a time so you don't waste time having to run forward back to the enemy and potentially give them time to recover. Compared to other bayonets, its light attack has a short range, but you'll primarily be utilizing the heavy attack, which is only a 10% drop in efficiency in exchange for extended range and compressing the damage into a smaller interval (compared to 2 light shots), allowing you time to react to the boss. Not much more to say other than this is the standard bayonet you will use.

Thunderbolt
The new kid on the block definitely pulls his own weight. While not every code can use it due to its requirements of B Dex and B+ Will, it's definitely worth having for those which can. Against enemies that have lightning resistance <= 10%, it is the most efficient damage you can do. Again, never use the heavy shot: it costs 3 ichor, moves slowly, and does low damage. It's light attacks come out at a blazing fast speed and deal piercing AOE damage. It does more damage than the Libertador, but the tradeoff is that it has an extremely low range, lower even than the Libertador's.
Range difference between light shots
Another plus for the Thunderbolt is it's very nice moveset: just two sweeping strikes, no backflip, no diagonal cleaves that can miss, just solid hits. This is my favorite bayonet melee moveset and won't interfere at all with your ichor regeneration. Not having to pace your light attack chains in intervals of 2 like the Libertador allow you to gain ichor much faster.
While Thunderbolt isn't going to replace Libertador, it has a niche as a fast, close-range, AOE that is extremely ichor efficient against those that do not resist the element. Note that despite most shots looking like blood, they have no elemental affinity. Thunderbolt is lightning element, so its efficacy is determined by your enemy's resistance. Against lightning susceptible foes, it can blow Libertador out of the water. As it so happens, Shamed Thralls, Raging Noblewomen, dogs, and Euphoric Soldiers are weak to lightning, which further solidifies this weapon niche for mobbing and AOE.

Honorable Mentions
Burning Disaster is the heaviest bayonet, has extreme requirements in C+ Str, B Dex, and C Mind, and its shot scalings are not good. It's light attack consumes 2 ichor to do puny damage, which isn't even AOE despite the appearance, and the flamethrower heavy attack is quite inefficient outside of a niche one-shot build. Why? It deals 30% additional melee damage due to its 60 Fire stat. Against fire weak, neutral, or slightly resisted enemies, it actually does very respectable melee damage. It doesn't hurt to carry it in your other slot for when you have the melee itch.
Bloody Snow has the fastest travelling, and furthest reaching light shot in the game. It's ice attuned, so it deals bonus damage to Thirsting Plunderers, Dust Cloud Bandits (sand bugs), Blazing Heretics or any other fire guys in the fire level. The downside is that its damage is horrendous due to the fact is has no Mind scaling, only Will. Scalings are evenly weighted, so having an A+ Will is equivalent to having a C+ in both Will and Mind, and indeed, it does similar damage to the Rubellite Piercer. Only really useful when taking advantage of both its extreme range and bonus damage against ice-weak foes.
The Lost Bayonet is usable in every code due to its D Will requirement... where D is the lowest you can have a stat. It's an honorable mention because this bayonet, transformed with Devourer, has carried my mage builds up until the Lord of Thunder DLC. Low requirements, high drain rating and good moveset makes my mage builds happy.
Builds
I'll outline my best builds which were created after playtesting.
Within each build, you have the choice of selecting either Weapon Drain Rating Up, or Ichor Focus, depending on your situation. Weapon Drain Rating Up increases Ichor gain by 50% when using Bloodsucking Blades. Attacking 6.5 times (depending on code) is equal to one proc of Ichor Focus. When playing solo, Ichor Focus pulls ahead by far, as you will have all the aggro. With a companion, they're about equal, though ideally, you would not be getting aggro and be allowed to DPS so you would prefer Weapon Drain Rating Up. When exploring, Weapon Drain Rating Up is preferable, as you can pick your fights to easily regain ichor and do no activate focus as much. Either is acceptable and it's up to you to make the decision what you use.
Another choice you have is the AOE skill: Hoarfrost Stream, Sands of Depravity, and Homing Hellfire are all excellent AOE solutions for you to pick from. Bayonets are single-target weapons, so balancing their weakness with a strong AOE is key to playing solo, and makes life easier with a companion.

Orion General Purpose Bayonet
Video of Thunderbolt Usage
I've swapped Concentration for Field of Thirst since the video, and am using Ichor Focus over Weapon Drain Rating Up as previously described. Notice how short the range is at 2:40 in the video. The video also highlights the speed at which you can light attack. While in the other video using Libertador, you could only light attack once before the tail sweep, using Thunderbolt, you can light attack twice. These smaller windows of damage allow you to sneak in some extra hits and more importantly, react better to the boss you're fighting. If you don't have long windows of opportunity to use the Libertador's heavy shot, use Thunderbolt's light shot.
Orion is the best code that allows the use of Thunderbolt, the mob-muncher. While typically, you would use Ivory Grace as the veil on a bayonet build, Orion's low Mind prevents us from using it so we must use the equally weighted Master Spines veil. The downside is that this veil has a lower dark gift stat so our AOE ability will be slightly weaker.
Reiterating from earlier: against bosses always swap to Libertador to use Fusillade Rondo, it does over 20% more damage.
While I'm outlining the best builds and codes to use for certain scenarios, the all but one of the remaining builds use very meta codes that are highly contested. Because of this, Orion is my main bayonet code, as I'd rather have the other codes available for other builds and be able to use Thunderbolt. If you're a bayonet aficionado who doesn't care for making another mage build, check out the following builds.

Ishtar Bossing Bayonet
Video Demonstration
I used Chaotic Ash in the video, as the Hellfire Knight takes almost no damage from Fusillade Rondo. It's a great choice to enhance your economy if you wish to use it.
This build deals the highest consistent damage, taking advantage of two buffs most other bayonet codes cannot use: Adrenaline and Offensive Order. Bayonet codes need a high Mind and Will stat to deal substantial damage, because of this, nearly all do not meet the B Str required to use Adrenaline and none other can use Offensive Order, with its S Fort requirement.
The build just does a lot of damage. Activate all your buffs and fire away. Because there are no magic gifts, we're selecting our veil purely on weight (to keep quick), and defense. I default to the Night Claw, since it has a usable parry as an Ogre-type veil. Against bosses that deal crush damage, go with Ivory Grace.

Queenslayer General Purpose Bayonet / Burst (melee bayo optional)
Queenslayer actually deals the most bayonet shot damage after using Final Journey, the problem is that you're then on a clock to defeat the boss within a minute and a half. If you don't mind using the most popular code and don't care for Thunderbolt (unusable with this code), this is an excellent general purpose code. The Venous Claw veil gives us the sweet Ogre-type parry and a respectable dark gift stat to empower our AOE.
On this build, I also carry the Burning Disaster Intensification to bring it into the light. As mentioned in the weapon section, this can output some serious melee damage if fire is not resisted by the enemy. Seriously, give this one a try for a minute on the punching bag or basic enemies and compare it to your one-handed sword builds.

Artemis General Purpose Bayonet
This was my original general purpose bayonet build of choice before Orion, allowing you to use Thunderbolt. This build has the best ichor economy, allowing you to have more DPS uptime assuming you have a partner to tank. It's nearly identical in terms of damage, only 3% less than Orion. You cannot use Field of Thirst, but do have an extra passive slot to use, enabling you to bring the Mind/Will for slightly more damage (still less than Orion), or Ichor Focus. Blood Grab, the exclusive Artemis passive, has been powercrept by Ichor Focus.
Feel free to replace Concentration if you'd prefer something like Hungering Feast for even more ichor. This code is a good option for those who want a viable off-meta code to play with bayonets, not wanting to replace their more powerful builds from the high demand codes on this list.

Queen General Purpose Bayonet
Tied with Artemis' Ichor Economy, you trade the ability to use Thunderbolt for 5% more damage than Orion and the Suicide Spurs veil, increasing your dark gift AOEs to be 22% more effective than Orion. This veil brings Radiant Blast up to dangerous power levels, almost equaling Rondo's damage. It is still more efficient to use Fusillade Rondo for a single target, since it costs 3 less ichor, but you have the option of a circular AOE, or a linear AOE now.
Build Summaries:
Orion: Ability to use Thunderbolt. Best off-meta code.
Ishtar: No Thunderbolt. Best consistent bossing code.
Queenslayer: No Thunderbolt. Best bossing code during Final Journey. Can melee things that are not resistant to fire with Burning Disaster.
Artemis: Ability to use Thunderbolt. Lower damage than Orion but better Ichor economy. Very off-meta so it's a safe build to keep around.
Queen: No Thunderbolt. Great ichor economy, highest gift damage, 5% more shot damage than Orion.
Let me know what you think and any questions you may have!

2020.02.11 03:29 IllithidActivity Ministry of Preservation retaliation?

The Tier I crew I GM for just succeeded on a score against an armored train on the lightning rail owned by the Ministry of Preservation. It took literally every stress box they had, every tick of Load, and all but a single level 2 Harm was full by the end. (Tip to GMs out there: A heavily-outfitted Leech with good destruction tools and a high-Prowess Lurk with Infiltrator can carve through a lot of metal!)
Now obviously the Ministry of Preservation is going to be pissed about this. This wasn't just a "hit," this was a catastrophic disaster for them and sends a message about the incompetency of the Ministry to all of Doskvol. The crew got about a Wanted Level and a half from the heist, resulting in the Slide going to jail (and managing to do quite well for herself on the inside) so in a way the Heat is spoken for, but I don't feel like Ministry will be satisfied with just that. I don't think it would be fun for the Ministry to rain down all the firepower a Tier V organization has over this Tier I gang, but they've got to do SOMEthing, right?
Some complicating factors:
So, thoughts?

2019.12.19 00:53 alvindrapern52 Simon Baz's Status in the DCU?

Okay my last two posts got deleted because I kept on opening up new tabs. Spare me if the post isn't very detailed.
Simon Baz hasn't been seen in comics since November 2018.
1 Green Lantern from Earth was killed in Heroes in Crisis. We still don't know who it was. I think it was Simon Baz.
Editorial hasn't been very clear about when things have taken place in the DCU as of now (a lot of events just take place, and we don't really know how our characters can be in multiple places at once...[Batman literally gets his back broken by Bane, is fighting Mrs. Freeze, and gets pummeled by Apex Predator Lex Luthor within the same week]
So back to my point. There are 6 Green Lanterns from Earth - Simon Baz, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, and Guy Gardner.
Hal is screwing with the timeline in Morrison's The Green Lantern with the Controllers and the Blackstars. In this new timeline, he has also allied himself with Blackstars John Stewart and Jessica Cruz. (I'm not personally a fan of Morrison's run - when can we get Rob Venditti back, DC?)
Kyle for sure is alive after Heroes in Crisis. He's seen consoling Donna Troy after Wally's and Roy's deaths.
Guy is seen fighting in Justice Doom War.
John is one of the main cast members of Scott Snyder's JL. He's seen fighting alongside Kyle and Guy in Justice Doom War. Justice Doom War for sure takes place after Heroes in Crisis, using the Titans comics as points of reference.
Jessica is seen roaming space in JLO - also, it'd be a bad move to kill her off because she's a minority character who has her own fanbase.
All 5 of the Green Lanterns listed above also appeared in the pages of Doomsday Clock, where they fight Dr. Manhattan. But not Simon.
Simon is seen in Justice League Drowned Earth, but that was released in November 2018. Drowned Earth was one of those crossovers I was talking about earlier where the storyline is clear, but editorial isn't very clear about when the storyline takes place. Other than that, he has received no other appearances.
Simon is by far the least popular Green Lantern. Though he isn't necessarily hated, his character hasn't really evolved past being Jessica's partner in the pages of Green Lanterns. He doesn't really have his own fanbase, but we know DC is in for it if they confirmed that they have killed another minority character (especially in these times). So did DC quietly kill him off?
Lmk what you think.

2019.11.25 07:27 Baz-Turadan MSSC & Mantle the Lost; my own personal Hatsu!

Given that we’re in this sub, I’m pretty sure every one of us has at some point wondered what our Nen type is, and then what ability we would make with that. I know I’ve been wondering since before I found this place. And I think I finally know, too. So it’s about damn time I stopped holding this back for fear of people thinking it’s overpowered. Let’s face it, everything we make for ourselves is probably a bit OP. Plus, these two abilities have a pair of downsides that may not be obvious to anyone but me.
One involves unknown consequences, something that I don’t like, but am willing to deal with in order to make it work. And they both involve emotional damage. Willingly inflicted emotional damage. I think I’m risking enough to make these work.
Before I get to the actual abilities though, a word about my Nen type. I’ve taken all sorts of tests, and thought about this plenty on my own too. Most tests say I’m either a conjurer or manipulator. One said I was an enhancer, and another said transmuter, I chose to ignore those outliers. But I noticed that some tests didn’t have specialist as a result (for whatever reason, I have no idea). And having thought about this plenty myself, I think I’m a specialist. Mostly because I really do feel like if I was anything else I’d have a fifty fifty chance of coming out as a manipulator or a conjurer, which doesn’t make any sense with the two not being next to each-other. But specialist is in the middle, so specialist it is.
Now, without further ado, my two abilities, inspired by the inability to pick something and stick with it without feeling like I’m missing out on something else….

Ability Name: My Sole Soul Creations (MSSC, said “misc” as in miscellaneous)
Purpose: Be able to have someone around who can do what needs doing, and always have a team to work with (this sounds strange given how introverted I am, but many tasks are much more doable and much less intimidating with friends to help). Also sort of avoid locking myself into only one ability, and provide a way for myself to grow in the future.
Nen Categories Used: Specialization, Manipulation, Conjuration.
Explanation: The first step is to come up with a character, and write about them. This can be done in the form of a filled out character format, or in the form of a short, as long as I’m the one that wrote it and the idea is my own. The character must be complete with a personality, looks, simple likes and dislikes, and some information like blood type. The more complete, the better. This includes a Nen ability.
If I want to create a character this way they must have some defining physical trait which is either extremely rare, or would be impossible for a normal human. This not only serves as a limitation, but also feeds into my second ability. In addition, no character I create can be good with all the advanced principles of Nen, I must choose some that they won’t be as good at, and may not be able to use at all. If I don’t fulfill these requirements the creation of the character will fail.
Once a character is written up I can summon them, destroying the original text.
Any character created will be fueled up by my Nen, which is all given to them at once. If the character uses too much Nen they’ll die, having used all of their life force.
Upon deciding a character should be created a massive amount of my Nen will rip free and be used to create them. This Nen is instantly filtered through my helper and will return to me. I will then go into a coma until the process is completed, at which point I’ll wake up and focus the Nen into one place to fully summon the character. Once a character is summoned they are permanent and cannot be gotten rid of except by them dying somehow. I never know how long this coma will last. It could be a few hours, or it could be a few days. It should never be longer than a week, though.
It should be noted that characters created with this ability will generally be far weaker than an ordinary Nen user. Thus, making an ability designed for sheer power is a bad idea. These will have to be versatile and clever in their use.
Only four characters can exist at any given time. Any attempt to create a fifth will simply fail. Of course, this means characters that have died no longer count toward this limit, since they aren’t around anymore.
Characters summoned with this ability are real living beings, and require food, water, and sleep, just like any other living thing. The ability ensures they will always feel a connection to me, but not that they will always be willing to do whatever I say, or that they won’t get mad at me for something. Basically, I’m their dad.
It may be important to note that characters created by this ability do not have a functioning reproductive system... There could be problems if they did, and this ability would need restrictions too heavy and dangerous for me to be okay with. They also will not age.

Ability Name: Mantle the Lost
Purpose: Have a way to grow more powerful with time. Also be able to fondly remember all the characters I create and inevitably loose.
Nen Categories Used: Specialist.
Explanation: Whenever a character I created with my first ability dies I will gain the ability to “mantle” that character, taking on their unusual trait (this was mentioned in my first ability, but every character I create must have an abnormal physical trait), as well as their basic Nen type, ability, and general spread of Nen capabilities. In return, if I were to kill a character I created, or purposefully get them killed, I would die as a penalty. Whenever a character I created dies, I will get a scar (not the injury, just the scar) as if I had suffered the damage that killed them and healed from it. If they die from using up all their Nen (which includes using up all the time they have), a number appears on my back instead.
This could mean horns appearing, a change of eye color, the appearance of an odd tattoo or birthmark, or anything else I may have given that character as their abnormality. This small transformation takes around about one second, and will only start after I’ve said the character’s name. I can only mantle one character at a time. During the transition I basically have no Hatsu.
Any ability used will not necessarily end when I swap to a different mantle. Abilities which conjure something, have lasting effects, or a necessary activation after which the ability remains active or an effect remains, will still remain active. I simply lose direct control over them while I’m not using that mantle. This means that I can conjure an item, then switch my mantle, and as long as the conjured item’s effect is automatic it will continue to function while I am without the ability that made it. I can dispel it at any time (unless other rules prevent me), but to re-conjure it I would have to go back into the mantle that let me conjure it in the first place. This means abilities with an activated lasting effect, conjured items, and other such abilities are much more effective for me.
Once I have a character to mantle, I cannot be without a mantle. I will always have a mantle active, except to switch into Specialist mode to use my first ability, but being in specialist mode is the temporary mode. I can maintain specialist mode for about five or six hours. When my first ability puts me into a temporary coma, though, specialist mode will last as long as the coma does, plus one hour within which I cannot mantle. After this period is up I would automatically regain the last mantle I had active.
While I’ve mantled a character my Nen will change how it acts. My basic Nen type will become that of the character, I will lose access to the function of my first ability, and the effectiveness of the various advanced principles of Nen as well as my effectiveness with the various categories will change to more closely resemble the character.
When I say my Nen effectiveness changes, this is relative. If I have two hundred points to distribute, and this represents my effectiveness and power, and the character had one hundred. To say the character had a forty in Gyo and a twenty in Ken, would mean that, while mantling the character, I would have an eighty in Gyo, and a forty in Ken. It’s by percentile, not actual value. However, if the character could not use En, I would not be able to use En while mantling them. Zero multiplied by anything is still zero. I can practice with a mantle active to slowly improve this, which can allow me to regain the use of something the character could not use, but it would be slower than normal.

As a foot-note for these; the restriction that makes it possible for me to have that second ability is the fact that I’ll have to watch the characters I made, the ones I love, die before I can do that. Emotional damage in exchange for power, basically. If the character was only around for a year, it would be easier to let go. But with an average of about seven years, getting attached is unavoidable. There is theoretically no limit to how many I can make, but only four existing at a time, and each living seven years, time is a limiting factor. But I would stop well before time made me, regardless, because it would get too painful after a while. In all honesty, I’m not even sure I would be able to handle this as many times as I’ve already made characters for, so. What’s listed below is all I would ever make. One even has an ability designed to make her able to extend her life, so she won’t die as fast as the others.
It should be noted that these are at least vaguely in the order in which I made them (or would, if Nen was real). Raspberry and Azalea would have to be made at the same time, since they’re twins and have partner abilities.
The characters!
Raspberry & Azalea; Zwillingskatzen
Cynvia; Essence of Ginnungagap
Kushiro; Deck of Many Things
Hagane; Jupiter
Fessel; Chain Demon
Andrea; Aether Trails
Lucin; Lock and Key
Lin Yi; Soul Circuit
For anyone wondering why all but one of these characters are girls… I have no idea. The gender of a character made by me sort of just happens at some point; I’ll start referring to them one way or another while they’re still a concept without a name, and that literally always sticks. This just happened without me meaning it to. It might have something to do with the fact that I was thinking each character was going to need a name for me to say in order to mantle them, and I’m better at coming up with girl’s names.
Also, something I realized after designing all this is that the need to say the name out loud is a huge disadvantage. And to counter it I could do something really clever. I could record myself saying each name on my phone, and if someone tried to stop me from speaking in any way during a fight, I could use the phone to play the recording, and activate the ability with that. It’s my voice, I said it, the ability’s rule is that the name must be said by me. Not that my voice has to come out of my face.
Edit: Holy hell, it was a lot of setup to get all eight posts set up in Google Docs and then pasted over and linked up. But I'm damn glad I did it, because this feels clean and smooth, and I love that. Nothing I ever do is this clean and smooth. Worth every damn second.

2019.11.21 23:54 Bonesaw-is-readyyy Green Lantern Story Treatment, Act II

So a couple days ago I posted the first part of my Green Lantern Corps story treatment and it got a decent number of upvotes so I've decided to post Act II... which is long af. It's basically a beat-for-beat breakdown of the movie, hopefully you make it through. Here we see the growing partnership between the rookie Simon Baz and his mentor Hal Jordan, as well as some big development Sinestro. My approach was to first and foremost create a fun space adventure story, but I wanted to touch on some socially relevant themes as well.
ACT I
ACT II
For the first time, we see Simon Baz in full GL regalia. Simon takes his place alongside the new recruits, next to a young woman. She's the same species as Sinestro. The woman glances over at Baz, curious that a human would be chosen to take the great Sinestro's place. Together, the recruits all speak the Oath for the first time. This is our “lock-in” moment, as we transition from Act I to Act II.
FLASHBACK. The planet KORUGAR, homeworld of Sinestro and his wife ARIN. Until he met her, Sinestro was AFRAID of what the future might hold, afraid of what he might become. But now he knows what he wants. Now, he's NOT AFRAID. A flash of green light! A power ring appears on Sinestro's finger, and he glows with green energy. “Thaal Sinestro of Korugar... Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps...”
Baz wakes up, having experienced Sinestro’s memory. Simon looks at his ring, wondering if it’s somehow still connected to Sinestro. The next morning, Simon reports to Hal Jordan, ready to begin his GL training. We get a basic explanation of how the ring works, how constructs are formed through willpower. Simon spars with Hal. Obviously the rookie is no match for the vet. Simon is defeated. “Not bad... for a human,” says Salakk, who was watching their sparring session. Hal challenges Salakk to step into the sparring arena with them, but Salakk says he has no time for Hal's petty human posturing. Hal pressures him even more, and Salakk sighs. “Very well.” He enters the sparring arena. Baz asks Salakk if he has a partner, and Salakk replies that he's never needed one... a SECOND POWER RING appears on one of Salakk's four arms! “I prefer to work alone.” Simon and Hal try to work together, but Salakk is a match for both of them!
After learning the basics, Hal says that the rest of Simon’s training will have to take place in the field. Hal says he’s more of a “learn as you go” type of mentor anyways. Salakk briefs Simon & Hal on their mission. They’ve picked up another lead on the fugitive known as Iroque, she’s hiding somewhere on RANX THE SENTIENT PLANET. She plans to sell the Aurem crystal to a wealthy bidder… a crime lord named KANJAR-RO. Their mission: travel to Ranx, find Iroque, arrest her, and secure the crystal. Salakk warns them to be cautious. This city is a sentient being, a living ecosystem, filled with the worst kind of scum. The city and the criminals form a symbiotic relationship. Don't worry,” says Hal, slapping Baz on the back. “So do we.” “I have my doubts, Jordan,” replies Salakk.
Simon & Hal board their ship and depart for Ranx. On the way, Simon asks Hal about his life back on Earth, if he misses it at all after being among the stars for so long. Hal replies that piloting, ironically, is what keeps him grounded. On Earth he was a test pilot for the Air Force. He stared fear in the eye every day, it was an adrenaline rush. He guesses that's why the ring chose him. They arrive on Ranx, a planet-wide metropolis. We get some typical buddy cop stuff here. The Lanterns investigate a bar in an especially seedy part of town. They interrupt the business deal between Iroque and Kanjar-Ro, ray guns get pulled, there’s a shootout in the bar. You know the drill.
Iroque tries to board a ship and escape, but the Lanterns combine their powers to create a mesh-like construct and contain the fleeing vessel. Amazingly, she’s able to break through the construct. Hal says that since Iroque has the Aurem crystal, their constructs are weakened. They’ll have to bring her in the old fashioned way. Hal & Simon race back to their own ship, and we get an aerial chase. At this point, the planet’s defence systems come on line and try to take them down, adding another layer to the action. The Lanterns chase Iroque’s ship out into space… but Ranx follows them! “I think we pissed it off,” says Baz. The city launches a barrage of missiles from it's exterior defences! Hal tells Baz to “hang on.” With incredible skill, he dodges the missiles. Unfortunately for Iroque, she proves to be the inferior pilot. The missiles hit their mark, pulverizing Iroque's ship. Iroque is hurled into space. Simon activates a tractor beam to pull her unconscious body aboard. Hal jumps into a wormhole and they escape.
FLASHBACK. Korugar. Sinestro has returned home after a mission. It's precious time for him to spend with his wife. Arin wishes that she could see her husband more, but Sinestro has a duty to the universe. He places his hand on Arin's abdomen. “I've thought of a name, you know,” says Arin. “We can name her after your mother. Soranik.” Suddenly, we see battleships coming over the horizon. Iroque and her Mercenaries attack Sinestro's home. Sinestro summons his ring and activates it, attempting to provide cover from the bombardment. Heroically, Sinestro flies out to meet the attackers in battle and fights them off. But his wife is killed in the skirmish. Iroque tells Sinestro that his “debt is paid” and departs. Sinestro holds Arin in his arms. “Don't be afraid,” she whispers quietly. “One day we’ll be together again...”
Back on the ship, Simon holds his head. He experienced the same memory flash. They arrive back on Oa. Iroque is taken into custody, and the Aurem crystal is placed in the EVIDENCE LOCKUP. Iroque is brought before the Guardians and sentenced for her crimes. She will be sent to the PRISON WORLD OF NOK, where she will be “rehabilitated.” As Iroque is carried out of the chamber, we see Sinestro looking on, recovered him his near-fatal injuries. Iroque sets her eyes on Sinestro and screams, “KILLER! TYRANT!”
The Guardians order Sinestro to step forward. He’s angry at the ruling. He believes that prison is too good for the likes of Iroque, and says that the Guardians should have executed Iroque for her crimes. Only then can Sinestro's wife be avenged. The Guardians warn Sinestro not to question their wisdom. Justice, not vengeance, is the way of a GL. Sinestro asks about his ring. Soon he will be fully recovered, and ready to resume his duty as GL. The Guardians say that the ring has abandoned Sinestro and chose a new bearer, it cannot return to him. “...What?” Sinestro is furious. The Guardians say that he has served the Corps well, but his time is over. The ring has chosen. Sinestro storms out.
Salakk tells Simon & Hal about their next mission. They will escort a prisoner barge to Nok, Iroque’s soon-to-be-permanent residence. On this mission they will work with another pair of GLs. The female recruit Simon stood next to during the Oath enters, flanked by an absolute UNIT of an alien. Upon seeing Hal, the hulking brute lets out a bellowing laugh. They exchange a rugged handshake, clearly old friends. Hal introduces KILOWOG, the toughest Green Lantern this side of the galaxy. The woman introduces herself as KATMA TUI of Korugar. She is honoured to meet Hal Jordan, Sinestro spoke very highly of him.
“Indeed,” Sinestro interrupts. Sinestro and Simon meet for the first time. Tension. Sinestro confronts Hal about Iroque's sentence. He thinks this escort mission is pointless. Nok is too good for criminals like Iroque. They should be eradicated permanently. Hal says that the Guardians have made their decision, but Sinestro cuts him off. Sinestro asks Hal about HIS decision. Why did he not kill Iroque when he had the chance? Sinestro would have gladly died, as long as Iroque died with him. Sinestro says that Jordan lacked the WILL to do what was necessary…
The prisoners are loaded onto the barge, accompanied by the Green Lanterns. Hal says they'll have to fly on impulse power until they reach the coordinates of the hyperspace lane leading to Nok. The planet is extremely remote, there are very few lanes reaching it. En route, Simon heads down to the dungeons of the barge to take his shift watching the convicts. Iroque can tell Simon’s a rookie. She says that the GL Corps isn’t as noble as they say. Some Lanterns are good, but others… like Sinestro… ABUSE their power. Katma interrupts. She creates a construct that binds Iroque. Katma comes from Korugar, and Sinestro is her hero. She won't stand to have his name dragged through the mud by criminal scum. Iroque says that she did something the GLs would never do to one of their own... she brought Sinestro to JUSTICE. BOOM!! The barge is attacked!
Back on Oa, Sinestro sneaks into the GL Corps evidence lockup. Even without his power ring, he is quite formidable. Sinestro breaks open the vault where the Aurem crystal is locked up! He steals the Yellow Element and takes Hal's ship, departing from the planet...
Cut back to the main mission. Iroque’s Mercenaries have come to break her out! Hal, Simon, Katma and Kilowog fight off the Mercenaries, but the barge is badly damaged in the skirmish. There’s a moment where Hal has Iroque at his mercy, the same way Sinestro did in the opening… but this time she has no Yellow Element to protect her. Simon creates a construct between them, stopping Hal from doing something he might regret. The prisoners are thrown back in their cells. Hal takes control of the barge again, and tells the others to minimize the damage as best they can. Simon, Katma, and Kilowog hold what's left of the barge together using a patchwork of green energy. Their strength of will is the only thing keeping the ship from being torn apart! The barge jumps through the wormhole! With a huge explosion the barge emerges on the other side, hurtling towards the jungle-covered planet Nok! “We're coming in hot!” yells Jordan. It's a crash landing!
Elsewhere in space, another ship emerges from a wormhole… it’s Sinestro. The ship descends on a desert planet called QWARD. The planet is populated by angelic beings in golden armour… THE WEPAONERS OF QWARD. Sinestro presents the Aurem crystal. The Yellow Element originated on Qward, but almost all of it was taken long ago. Most of the crystals have either decayed over time or been destroyed. Sinestro tells them that his Green Lantern ring has been stolen from him. He needs a new ring, a new weapon to continue his crusade for justice. One far more powerful. Only the Weaponers of Qward will be able to craft such a weapon from Aurem crystal. Sinestro is led to an ancient temple, where the Weaponers of Qward guard the entrance to a POCKET DIMENSION. A sphere of yellow energy. Sinestro must enter to prove himself worthy of wielding the Yellow Element. He asks what's inside, and the Weaponers cryptically tell him that he must truly understand fear if he is to weaponize it. Determined, Sinestro enters…
The barge crash lands on Nok, in the middle of a jungle. The vegetation seems to have a luminescent quality to it. Glowing vibrant shades of INDIGO. Waves of colour seem to almost pulse through all life on the planet, and Simon gets the sense that everything is somehow connected. Insectoid-like jungle creatures swarm the heroes. They battle until the monsters are subdued by the arrival of a tiny, elderly alien. A shaman with indigo coloured robes. He introduces himself as NATROMO, WARDEN OF NOK AND KEEPER OF THE INDIGO LIGHT. He’s been expecting them.
Simon, Hal, Katma, and Kilowog unload the prisoners. They all follow Natromo through the jungle to a small village. The villagers wear the same indigo-coloured robes as Natromo. Beneath the village, Natromo shows them the “heart” of the planet. It looks almost like a literal heart, with blood vessels extending in all directions up to the planet's surface. The core glows a vibrant indigo colour, and seems to be the source of the pulses Simon noticed before. This is the INDIGO POWER BATTERY. Natromo explains that prisoners are brought here for “rehabilitation.” Each of them is equipped with an INDIGO POWER RING. The GL ring thrives on free will, and the indigo ring removes it completely. All of the villagers were criminals who were once sent here. The ring doesn't give them any power of any kind, but it binds them to the planet and forces the wearer to behave with compassion. Iroque steps forward and receives the ring. Immediately she is bathed in glowing indigo light. Her eyes completely change colour to indigo, but there is an emptiness about them. Simon is creeped out by the entire ritual.
They return to the village. Natromo says that their barge has been destroyed. They'll need to rest and recharge their rings before returning to Oa. The villagers have already retrieved their portable power batteries and prepared their accommodations. Simon asks Hal what he thinks of this place. Hal says that many Lanterns feel this type of life is actually better than what these prisoners deserve. “Like Sinestro?” Simon replies. Hal nods. “But what do YOU think?” Hal pauses for a moment, looking up at the clear night's sky. “I've spent so much time out there, catching the bad guys... I haven't thought much about what happens to them after I do.” “You're not like him, Hal,” says Baz. “You don't have to be...”
Sinestro finds himself in a familiar place. Korugar. However, the planet is not how he remembers it… it’s a dystopian hellscape! Sinestro’s people run up to him, desperately pleading. “Why did you not do more? How could you let this happen?” Sinestro finds himself in a cemetery. Hundreds of Korugarans rise from their graves. They look like ghosts made of yellow energy. They are Sinestro's fear incarnate. The good people of Korugar, dead because of his failure. Finally, Sinestro is confronted by the ghost of his wife Arin. She says that Sinestro took an OATH, not to the Green Lantern Corps, but to her. He said he would protect her. He lacked the will to do what was necessary. Sinestro says he will not let other innocents meet the same fate... he will do WHATEVER IT TAKES. With a mighty yell, the spirits of Korugar are absorbed by Sinestro. His body glows with yellow energy…
The world dissolves around him, leaving a black, empty void. Standing across from Sinestro we see Simon Baz. “I grow tired of this,” says Sinestro, “I grow tired of your intrusions into my mind.” Simon asks where they are. Sinestro replies that this place presents one's greatest fear. The black void starts to change, Sinestro rises above Simon and we see a world, a universe, under a MILITANT POLICE STATE. Sinestro embodies Simon’s fear of unchecked authority.
On Qward, Sinestro emerges from the pocket dimension. He asks the Weaponers what that place was, if it was real. They say it was real to him. The Weaponers say that his GL ring was weakened in the presence of the Aurem crystal. They describe a YELLOW IMPURITY that exists within GL rings. The Yellow Impurity is the reason why Green Lanterns are chosen for their ability to overcome fear. The impurity is a source of FEAR, and it weakens one's willpower. Now, Sinestro will be the MASTER of the Yellow Impurity. The master of FEAR. The Weaponers of Qward fulfil Sinestro's wishes, forging him a YELLOW RING AND POWER BATTERY. They bow before Sinestro as he takes the ring, transforming himself into the first ever YELLOW LANTERN
Concluded in ACT III...

2019.11.20 03:32 Bonesaw-is-readyyy Green Lantern Story Treatment

Hey guys, first time posting on here so hopefully you like what I've come up with. I'm a huge Green Lantern fan and I think it had and still has tremendous potential as a feature film. Obviously there's a natural comparison to be made between GL and Marvel's GOTG, but I wanted to take some inspiration from Black Panther and Star Trek as well. Hopefully it works. I'm just going to start with Act I, and if there's feedback and people seem to like it then I'll post the rest of the treatment. Here we go…
ACT I
We open in the void of space, following a small ship as it enters an ASTEROID FIELD. We're introduced to the ship's pilot, HAL JORDAN, and his crimson-skinned alien partner, THAAL SINESTRO. Hal expertly lands the ship on one of the larger asteroids. On the rocky surface we see the remains of a MINING COLONY. Sinestro steps out of the ship, with Hal close behind. Using his GREEN RING, Sinestro begins scanning the surrounding environment. He says that Jordan's lead paid off. Their target is here... somewhere. “Of course my lead paid off,” Hal replies, “I questioned her intimately.” Sinestro isn't the joking type... and even if he was this wouldn't be the time. Hal ignites his own green ring and takes flight, following Sinestro into a mining crater. The target is question is named IROQUE, and Sinestro clearly has a vendetta against her. Iroque is an alien with purple skin, a staff-like weapon, and tribal tattoos covering most of her body. According to Hal's lead, Iroque came here in search of a DANGEROUS WEAPON... something hidden deep within these tunnels and caves.
They track down Iroque and her crew of MERCENARIES, who are here attempting to extract a yellow crystal from the centre of the asteroid. The crystal is one of the rarest substances in the galaxy... AUREM, THE YELLOW ELEMENT. Naturally, Hal & Sinestro bust in and we get our first action scene. Iroque tries to flee with the crystal and Sinestro relentlessly gives chase. Hal is left to deal with the Mercenaries as the rocky cavern collapses around them. Sinestro corners Iroque. The vengeful Lantern attempts to EXECUTE her... but the beam from his ring is somehow blocked by Iroque's staff! With a furious cry, Iroque rises up and attacks Sinestro. He conjures a pair of swords to fight her off, but Iroque's staff is able to cut right through them! Sinestro's constructs shatter and Iroque lands the final, devastating blow, stabbing him straight through the chest!
Hal's ring alerts him that Sinestro is in trouble. He catches up to the action and finds his horribly injured friend. “No...” The green light surrounding Sinestro fades out, and his ring flies off his finger. “Searching for worthy replacement...” The ring zooms away. In desperation, Hal generates a construct around Sinestro, attempting to stabilise him. Sinestro tells Hal to leave him and go after Iroque, who is making her getaway. He passes out from pain. Using the construct, Hal carries Sinestro to their ship and keeps him alive. Activating the ship's cosmic drive, Hal sets a course for the planet OA.
Meanwhile, Sinestro's old ring flies through space, zooming past planets, moons and stars... “Scanning for worthy replacement...”
OPENING CREDITS: GREEN LANTERN CORPS.
DETROIT, MICHIGAN. Here we are introduced to SIMON BAZ, 26 years old, Michigan born-and-raised. He's driving an old pick-up with one of the taillights busted. Like the city of Detroit, Simon's truck has seen better days. He lives in a run down apartment and works on the assembly line for a car manufacturer. After a hard day on the line, Simon goes out for a beer with some buddies. One of the servers at the bar flirts with Simon, and they hit it off. Simon leaves the bar with the waitress when her shift ends. However, he notices a car following them. Lights flash, he gets pulled over. An obnoxious STATE TROOPER raps on his window, immediately addressing the woman before even speaking to Simon. The trooper keeps hassles Simon, asking how fast he is going, what he's doing out this late on a weeknight, where he was coming from. When the cop finds out that Simon was at a bar, he makes him step out of the car. The cop checks Simon's license. He says he ran his plates, and brings up the fact that Simon has a CRIMINAL RECORD. The cop continues hassling Simon, embarrassing him in front of the woman by making him walk the line even though he's clearly not drunk. Finally, the cop writes him a ticket for his taillight. Angry from the whole incident, Simon just drops the woman off at her place and heads home. The next morning, Simon shows up for work at the factory and finds everyone standing outside a locked gate. There's a sign saying that the factory has been closed down.
Hal’s ship lands on Oa, planetary headquarters of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS. Barely clinging to life, Sinestro is rushed to a medical facility. Hal meanwhile must speak to the High Council… THE GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE. The Guardians oversee the GL Corps. He reports what happened at the asteroid colony: Iroque escaped with an Aurem crystal. The Yellow Element allowed her to break Sinestro’s constructs. Hal kept Sinestro alive, but Sinestro’s ring abandoned him as though he had fallen in battle. The Guardians are disturbed. They instruct Hal to remain on Oa until Sinestro’s replacement is chosen…
Back on Earth, Simon is at home looking for a new job when two cops arrive at his door. Apparently his old factory has been vandalised. The police suspect Simon. He has the motive and he has priors. They bring him down to the station for questioning. Simon of course denies having anything to do with this, but keeps getting pressed and eventually lashes out, yelling at the police in frustration.
Sinestro's power ring continues to hurtle through space, soaring past the planets of our own solar system. “Scanning. Scanning.” The ring is still searching for something. For SOMEONE. At last, the ring approaches Earth. It's brilliant green light streaks across the night's sky like a shooting star. “Worthy sentient found.” The ring flies above Detroit, finally reaching the police station where Simon is being held. “Simon Baz of Earth... You have the ability to overcome great fear...” Confused and, ironically, afraid, Simon watches as the ring appears on his finger. He's engulfed in powerful green light! “Welcome to the GREEN LANTERN CORPS.”
“...The what?!”
The cops walk back into the room and have no idea what's on. Simon starts to panic. The cops pull out guns and tell Simon to stand down. Simon yells at the ring to let him go. Nothing. The officers open fire! Almost instantly, a barrier of green energy appears and deflects the bullets. “OH, SHIT!” Simon tries to put his hands up to surrender, but the ring reacts. The cops are sent flying backwards by a wave of green energy. Without warning, the ring blasts its way through the wall of the police station, and Simon takes flight! He tries to resist, but he's on auto-pilot! His entire body still glowing in green light, the ring pulls Simon higher and higher into the air! He looks down, totally freaking out as lights from the city below become tiny specs. He bursts through the clouds, flying high above the Earth! To Simon's amazement, he's still able to breathe. The emerald energy is protecting him somehow. The ring glows, opening a vortex in space! Simon closes his eyes and braces himself as he flies through the portal…
Simon emerges from the portal, arriving on Oa. It's a spectacular sight to be hold, aliens from thousands of different worlds all wearing the same ring with the same glowing green energy. Simon is greeted by a four-armed alien named SALAKK, who addresses him as "recruit," sarcastically remarking that the Corps must be lowering its standards if they're bringing in another human. Salakk casually explains to Simon where he is, and that's he's been chosen to join an intergalactic police force called the Green Lantern Corps. He explains that the power ring is the weapon of a Green Lantern, and that it has chosen him. Simon asks about all the different life-forms on the planet, and Salakk tells him that the GL Corps maintains justice across the cosmos. All the Green Lanterns come from different worlds, but they are united under a common cause: THE OATH.
Simon says that Salakk mentioned “another” human--
“Well I'll be damned,” a voice interjects. Simon turns around and sees a man with his hand extended. “Hal. Hal Jordan.” Hal empathises with Simon. It wasn't too long ago that he was in Simon's shoes. Hal was the only human to ever be chosen as a GL... until now. He says that once Simon completes his basic training, they'll be PARTNERS. Simon isn't interested in being a cop, especially a one in outer space. Hal knows it can be overwhelming, but it's a great honour. Simon replies that he didn't ask for this shit, and he damn sure doesn't want it. Listen!” Hal interjects, losing his patience. “My FRIEND, my MENTOR, nearly DIED in the line of duty. His ring CHOSE YOU, and it chose you for a reason. You should be proud to wear that ring, to be given this responsibility. The Green Lantern Corps is important.” Simon says that if they're anything like the police on Earth, they're not responsible at all. Hal stops him. He says that he gets it, but the GL Corps is different. Hal says that ultimately it's Simon's decision, and he'll have until tomorrow to make it. Tomorrow he'll either take the Oath, or be returned home. He wants Simon to think about it. Simon says that Hal isn't like him. Hal doesn't “get it.” Simon walks away...
Hal visits the Green Lantern Corps MEDICAL FACILITY, where Sinestro is being attended to by a medical robot. He's still in critical condition, it's remarkable he survived at all. The medic tells Hal that the only thing that kept Sinestro alive was Hal's own FORCE OF WILL. The medic asks about Sinestro's ring. Hal says that's it's chosen a replacement. The robot finds this curious, as the ring only abandons it's Lantern when they die. It's NEVER abandoned a Lantern that was still alive...
Nighttime on Oa. Salakk shows Simon his quarters in the GL BARRACKS, where he finds his POWER BATTERY. Simon's ring flies off his finger, connecting to the battery and charging itself. Creating a wormhole to transport Simon across the galaxy drained the ring of almost all it's power. Simon sits down and contemplates everything that's happened. It's a lot to process. Hal comes by to talk to him. His ring is being charged as well, so hes out of uniform and in his regular clothes. It's a real human moment between two people in a surreal situation. Simon asks about the "charging station" and Hal explains that every GL has one to go with their ring. The batteries all draw energy from the CENTRAL POWER BATTERY here on Oa. Simon asks about the partner Hal mentioned, and Hal says that his partner is in rough shape but will make it. Simon says that he lashed out and didn't mean to be disrespectful. But he's got a rocky relationship with authority...
FLASHBACK. DETROIT, FIVE YEARS AGO. Simon says he grew up without a father. His mom worked multiple jobs to get by. She wasn't home often, so he and his brother had to look out for each other. Simon's brother got involved with some dangerous people, and eventually Simon got roped in as well. They sold drugs, but the law caught up with them. We see Simon and his brother swarmed by cops on a city block. Simon gets tackled by an officer, his head gets smashed into the pavement. The cops rough him up, bloody, him, break his jaw. BANG! Barely conscious, Simon looks on as a cop shoots his brother in the back! Simon screams but the cops hit him again. He gets thrown into the back of the squad car...MUGSHOTS. Simon is taken into custody. He served 18 months for drug offences. The cop that murdered his brother was suspended for 30 days. With pay.
Back in the present, Simon says that when the ring chose him, it said he had the power to overcome fear. Ironically, his greatest fear growing up was the police. Hal says that whatever he's experienced back home, the ring chose him. Not in spite of those experiences, but BECAUSE of them. Hal says that Simon's life on Earth is what will give him the wisdom to wield the ring's power justly and responsibly. At the end of the day, a Green Lantern must have the WILL to act. Tomorrow, Simon must decide. Go home to his old life on Earth, or take the Oath. Hal gets up and leaves. Before he goes, Simon stops him. Hal's words seem to have had some effect. “What is this Oath exactly...?”
Continued in ACT II...
EDIT: Although originally I used the name John Stewart, but with elements of the Simon Baz origin story, I've decided to switch it over to Simon Baz entirely so as to not alienate GL purists. At first I thought a black GL named John Stewart would be more "recognisable" to general audiences, but that's probably not the case to be honest. So Simon Baz it is. His story is more interesting overall IMO.

2019.08.05 01:16 Akkane00 Green Lantern Show Concept

Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz would be the main GL's. I would want John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Sodam Yat, Guy Gardner, and Hal Jordan, etc to at least make guest appearances, but if it's not possible then, we don't need them ig.
I would like other Lanterns to appear: like Saint Walker, Atrocitus, Sinestro, etc.
Ideally:
Simon Baz (Haaz Sleiman) and Jessica Cruz (Melissa Fumero) would be GL partners and the main villain would probably be Atrocitus (Kevin Grevioux), in the first season. If it gets a season two, move on to Sinestro (Luke Evans), and if it gets a season three, maybe... Amon Sur (cant think of an actor for him). Some recurring characters could include Saint Walker (Doug Jones), Kyle Rayner (Michael Trevino) and Guy Gardner (Joseph Morgan).
What do you guys think?

2019.07.24 07:36 Jackygold [M4A] The Modern Kingdom (World of Valiea)

The world of Valiea is a project I've been working on for a couple of months now, however, I have mostly been working on the map including a continental map, city map, climate, and country map.

This is a repost of my first post as I changed quite a bit around and reworked new flags/family lines.

About the world:

The world of Valiea is a modern world in which kingdoms still continue to rule. There are no democracies, there are only monarchies. These kingdoms include:
Odesh Sultanate
A middle-eastern styled kingdom set at the southern tip of the continent of Hilix. Odesh Sultanate is a mostly desert landscape with Mediterranean conditions near the coastal areas. Their culture is rich in a nomadic and religious lifestyle. The ruling family in Odesh (The Azzaam Dynasty) has strong control over the riches of the land, making its cities oases in the desert. The leader of the Odesh, Sultan Azzaam, is known for his lavish lifestyle and the trade negotiations with the other kingdoms.
The Kingdom of Spana
A very diverse culture, the Kingdom of Spana is rich in farming and technology. The Gendarmerie, the military, runs the Law Enforcement within Spana and Spana is know for its militaristic society. Spana has been modeled after Spain and Italy, making it rich in culture and food. The Kingdom of Spana is just in the Northern region of Hilix. The ruling family in Spana (The Moya family) is known for their strict way of life to the old ways. This includes political prosecution of those who they deem sinful.
The Esparian Empire
The Esparian Empire is the largest of the kingdoms and has been modeled after an English/Slavic lifestyle. The Esparian Empire owns the entire continent of Eplix and Efla as well as having the continent of Emiukai (Oshwa) as a colony. The Esparians are known for their rich culture through the arts and their need for trade. The Esparian Empire is too a militaristic society with much of its Law Enforcement or jobs in general being military-related. The Esparian Empire's citizens see the royal family as gods, however, not all see it this way, especially those in the Oshwa Colony. The harsh treatment of the Oshwan people (having taken the island by force) has caused some to view the king, King Maddox the 3rd, to be a harsh dictator, causing some to form rebellion groups, however, these forces are typically crushed by the might of the Esparian Empire.
The former Oshwa Empire (Oshwan Colony)
Oshwa, a once proud and strong people inspired by Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam, have since fallen under the rule of the Esparian Empire. The Oshwans are a diverse group with some having grown up in the vast Yaguchi mountain range, forming a mountain culture and others growing up near the coast and forming fishing societies which harvest the Croydes Ocean for its vast amount of fish. Its Capital, Kaeyong, is perhaps one of the oldest cities in Valiea and was the first to fall during the Esparian-Oshwan War. Oshwa is perhaps one of the oldest civilizations as well, having gone through many dynasties on and off over the course of 3,500 years. Its former and last Emperor, Emperor Ozaki Tadasuke was the one to sign the unconditional surrender to the Esparians. There is still much debate by the Oshwans as to why it was signed as King Maddox the 3rd was not present at the signing nor was on the continent and as to why Emperor Tadasuke would sign such a document without the presence of the ruling party. Many see this as a great deal of disrespect by the Esparians and is still a widely heated topic amongst the Oshwans still to this day.

The Setting and Plot:

The year is 2865, the world has finally come to peace after the end of the Esparian-Oshwan War and the Odeshian Civil War. Trade continues normally between all three kingdoms and everything appears to be in order. There is talk of the King's old age having reached the ripe age of 85 and many believe that he may perish soon. Many in the Kingdoms believe that once the king has passed away, a new and less experienced successor will take the throne leaving the Esparian Empire weak.
The Esparian Empire's family tree has grown with both King Maddox and Queen Madeleine as they now have three Princes and one Princess. The Princess has since been married off to a Prince within the Spana and of the three Princes, only two have found wives. The oldest of the three, Prince Jaylin, has since had two children, both Prince Harvey and Princess Eliza. The second brother, Prince Deon, has married as well and has yet to bare a child. Of all of the brothers, the youngest of them, Prince Maximus, has yet to be married at the age of 29. The lack of pressure from his family (as he is not the heir to the throne, that being Prince Jaylin) having not given him much thought about it. Prince Maximus, unlike his brothers, would much prefer to read books, enjoy his studies, and spend his time being involved in political affairs. Much like an Esparian, he has a knack for the in and outs of Political affairs, however, there is a contrast, rather than serving the interests of Esparia itself or more so the interests of power and the royal family, he attempts to serve the world itself and establish things for the good of the people.

2019.06.08 21:51 richclominson Bootstrapping a marketplace for mentors to $3,500/month

Hey /EntrepreneurRideAlong! It's Rich, maker of Failory, the content site for entrepreneurs.
Yesterday, I published an interview with the Foti, a 33-year-old entrepreneur who has co-founded GrowthMentor, a 2-sided platform that gives entrepreneurs the ability to connect with growth mentors for calls. They started in September 2018 and have since grown, mainly through free marketing channels, up to $3,500/month. Learn from Foti’s successes and mistakes.
Here it is! Let me if you have any question that Foti will be answering them.

Hi Foti! What's your background, and what are you currently working on?

I'm what you would call a 'third culture kid.' I was born in America, but my parents are Greeks. At three years old we moved to Greece. Two years later I moved back to America as a 5-year-old, not knowing any English. At 15, after I had forgotten most of my Greek, we moved back to Greece. But one thing that's been a constant throughout all that madness was my exposure to entrepreneurship. My Dad was a pretty badass commercial real estate developer in Florida in the 80's and 90's. So as a 10 year old I remember spending my afternoons helping out at my his construction sites and the father-son chats we'd have on the way back home where I'd get to learn about the nuances between cost per square foot, utilization rates, and negotiation tactics he'd use to hustle vendors to get the lowest rates on construction material.
Fast forward two decades and I'm now 33 years old and an entrepreneur myself! I'm currently working on building a community called GrowthMentor. GrowthMentor is a 2-sided platform that gives entrepreneurs and marketers the ability to connect with amazing growth mentors for calls on Skype. All of the mentors on the platform go through an intense vetting process. We guarantee that they've got the track-record to back-up their claims, and also that they have the soft-skills required to be exceptional mentors. Entrance to the platform costs $99 per year, but this includes 5 hours of free mentorship calls and a bunch of other goodies. All growth mentors are required to have completed at least three mentor sessions at zero cost before they can charge for their time.
GrowthMentor

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

After completing my IB exams in high school I decided to keep scratching that entrepreneurial itch by studying business at CASS Business School in London where I majored in finance. Honestly, University was a bit of a blur, but I do remember realizing early on that I wasn't a fan of the big financial institutions. I could never reconcile fiat currencies and the total ridiculousness of wealth inequality. We can print money out of thin air and create trillions in bullshit derivatives, yet 2 billion people don't have access to clean drinking water. Right... Never ended up using that Finance degree in a career kind of way, but those courses in stats were super useful when it came time to setting up statistically significant A/B tests a few years down the road.
After University I ended up heading growth at EuroVPS, a managed hosting provider, as their first marketing hire. With zero experience in digital marketing and a team that consisted of mostly engineers, I ended up having to fake it till I made it and learned everything by myself through trial and error. I made every noob mistake in the book. From forgetting to set 301 redirects after a site relaunch, to using broad match keywords in Adwords without a single negative keyword. I've screwed up more ways than most people would ever financially afford to screw up.
I spent countless hours reading blog posts and taking Udemy courses on new areas I wanted to improve in. While I learned a lot, I noticed my productivity was inversely correlated to how much stuff I learned. The more time I spent learning things, the less time I had to actually get things done. There had to be a better way to learn and stay competitively productive concurrently.
That's when the idea hit me.
This was the breakthrough move I made that ultimately planted the seed for the birth of GrowthMentor. Instead of watching courses made by some random person who knows nothing about my business, why don't I hack together my own real life courses custom tailored to my point-in-time situation?
To do this I'd I'd create job postings on Upwork such as: "60 minutes Skype call with Facebook Ads expert," and do screen shares with freelance subject-matter expertise and learn directly from them in a field environment. I was shocked at how much faster I learned this way. I was breaking through plateaus left and right. If anything seemed difficult or out of reach to learn I'd simply create a job posting on Upwork and get on a call with an expert. I'd make sure to do my homework and due diligence before the call as to be prepared with structured questions. I'd even record my screen so I could play it back later. This way I could focus 100% without having to take notes.
This was how the idea originated. I figured, "I'm just a typical person who has typical problems," so if this works for me, it'll probably work for other people too!
‍

How did you build GrowthMentor?

I registered the domain name GrowthMentor.io on June 18th, 2017 but didn't start actually working on the idea till October of that year. My wife teaches English online via this platform called Italki, so I kind of knew that I wanted to take a similar approach from a product perspective since I had seen it work first hand for years.
The first iteration of GrowthMentor was a simple landing page I put up to validate the idea. I used a Twitter bootstrap template to hack together a landing page then drove $500 worth of Adwords traffic to it bidding on the keyword "find business mentor" I had a ±18% conversion rate with an average CPC of $2 and managed to score 40 leads. Of which I got on the phone with 10 of them for customer development interviews. I used a simple Typeform to profile those initial users and extract as much qualitative data as possible into the pain points of growth. I isolated that loneliness was a major pain point common to all early respondents. And it's only superficially being solved and also exacerbated by social media. It's a pain point that was integral to my own motivations for jumping on those Skype calls with the Upwork contractors, so I explored the underlying causes in more depth. What I found was that people in growth have very specific stressors which are hard to relate to if you're not also in growth.
GrowthMentor - First Version
After roughly three months of customer development and fine tuning our positioning strategy, it was time to start building. Wireframing and then prototyping took around a month. We started sketching every screen out by hand, and then transitioned to Google Docs. After each screen was laid out in Google Docs, Alek Manov turned them into high fidelity designs which we iterated on for a month via InvisionApp. By mid-March, we were ready to start development.
We outsourced the development to Ragnarson who specializes on Ruby on Rails web apps. We were well prepared with clickable prototypes on InvisionApp that 1:1 mirrored all of the functionality of the final build. This dramatically reduced the total build time. Development officially started on April and 6 months later we launched the public beta with more features than we really needed. We knew we could have gone a bit lighter on the build-spec, but thought our target audience was very web savvy and had higher expectations than your traditional B2C customer personas.
If we were going to do this, we were going to do it properly. Not going to reveal exact build cost, but it was around the cost of a brand new BMW sedan. We ran out of runway (aka my savings) a month after we launched and the funding of the continued development comes from my day job's income, exciting times for sure :)
Minimum delightful product > Minimum viable product
We didn't make a big fuss about the platform pre-launch, no pre-launch promotions or anything like that. I'm a big fan of shadow launches because they give you buffer to fix things before the spotlight is on you. We did do a targeted 1:1 outreach campaign for mentors so we could launch with a decent quantity already onboard. I think we had like 15 mentors on the platform the day we launched the public beta.

Which were your marketing strategies to grow your business?

The first two weeks after we launched we did absolutely zero promotion. We focused exclusively on 1:1 outreach to get more mentors onboard, targeting growth people we personally admired and that we believed had the right ethos fit. Once we had around 30 mentors, we decided to tippy toe into the limelight a little more. Our first "public" appearance came via a post on the SaaS Growth Hacks Facebook group where I told the story of the platform and asked if people resonated with it. I was blown away by the positive response. We must of got more than 100 sign ups from that single post.
Since we're bootstrapped, we exhausted all free marketing channels first. That meant mingling in niche communities like IndieHackers, GrowthHackers and a variety of Slack channels. This was a go-go-go time period where we didn't get to sleep that much. LinkedIn worked really well too. I'm not really a big social media user but I knew that if I was going to play the role of a founder of a marketing platform, I had to up my game. We also did a lot of blog posting writing dozens blog posts those first few months. A few of those posts are starting to rank for some pretty serious keywords, but as we all know, SEO is a long game. My biggest regret is that I didn't promote those early posts enough. It was one of those cases where I "knew" I should do it and I even made a pretty sweet checklist for it, but I just ran out of steam...
GrowthMentor's Instagram
We spread ourselves way too thin those early days. I should have delegated the promotion to my VA instead of all the list building I had them do. At one point I went on a massive targeted scraping campaign with the big picture to send out semi-personalized (at scale) email drips to drum up demand. I only ended up using like 2 or 3 of those lists. It takes a lot of time to do outreach at scale properly, and if you're managing operations, creating content, and also juggling a day job, it's like the first thing to cut from the "to-do" list. Anything done at scale carries the potential risk to tarnish your brand if executed improperly.
Doing things that didn't scale like cultivating 1:1 friendships with the mentors and mentees was our most successful marketing strategy. Unlike other B2C 2-sided marketplaces like AirBNB where the supply side are just normal people trying to make some side cash, our supply were bad-ass growth marketers that legit wanted to help people grow. Many of them are deeply entrenched in the startup scene with huge networks. So leveraging their networks was kind of a no-brainer for us. We didn't want to create a "marketplace," we wanted this to be a community.
We started with private Facebook groups, one for the mentors first, then a few months later, one just for the mentees. It turned out to be a great place we could ask for feedback from super smart growth peeps, share our progress, and where members could network with each other.
‍

What are your goals for the future?

In December 2018, we added the ability for mentors to set their rate to free. Our hypothesis was that it would act as a catalyst to spur platform engagement. It worked. Since growth mentors legit enjoy helping, they had no problem offering a couple hours per month for free to mentor bootstrapped startups. This completely demolished the barriers to "aha" moment for mentees leading to hockey stick growth in session bookings which led to hockey stick growth in reviews and social proof.
GrowthMentor Growth in Sessions Booked
We didn't make any money from that spike in usage since the price was zero. But in those first pre-traction moments, optimizing for learning and getting that social proof from early adopters is more important than making a quick buck. Think, we can now turn around and leverage that social proof in our marketing to increase reach and conversion rates. Which is exactly what we did!
After two months we hit the +500 booked session milestone and we decided it was time to monetize. We decided to put up a $99/year paywall for access to the platform. All early adopters were grandfathered in free for life. Our goal is now to raise money through selling subscriptions so that we can continue product development.

What were the biggest challenges you faced and obstacles you overcame?

The biggest challenge is figuring out a way to educate founders and marketers that there's a whole new way that they can learn hard stuff. And that's the peer to peer way. For example yesterday I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to properly set up cross domain tracking on Google Tag Manager. So I jumped on a 15 minute Skype call with Max Corbeau, a growth mentor who specializes in analytics. He walked me through it on a Skype screenshare and within 3 minutes my problem was solved.
If it wasn't for him, I'd probably hire some freelancer to fix it for me and lose out on that opportunity to learn something new. Busy/successful people don't have time to read hours of blog posts and watch online courses. Either they know how to do it, or they hire someone who can do it for them. Their time is too valuable to waste. Communicating succinctly that there's a middle ground option is my biggest challenge so far in the realm of product marketing, but we're getting there!
In terms of the chicken vs. egg dilemma, I'd say the biggest challenge is demand side acquisition. The first month was easy, just post on Facebook Groups and communities and shout some stuff on LinkedIn. But after the low lying fruits are eaten, you need to become more sophisticated and choose your weapon of choice. Outbound? Inbound? PPC? Referral? I used to think, "I'll just do them all!" but OMG, that does not work when you're a team of two people working this alongside another full time job!
Ideating, executing, and tracking results of growth experiments is relatively straight-forward, but for me, what's most challenging is managing the pressure of taking corrective action based on the data. There's a million directions you can take, and as growth lead, you have to make the tough calls. My biggest obstacle is controlling my FOMO. There's always going to be that annoying little voice in the back of your head telling you that you're missing out on huge opportunities by not doing that "new cool thing." 99% of the time that voice is just talking shit. Ignore it.
‍

Which are your greatest disadvantages? What were your worst mistakes?

My greatest disadvantage is that I don't know Ruby on Rails, I'm a non-technical founder. I can't just jump into the code and fix things. Anything that needs to be done like bug fixes or new features has a significant cash cost. And as a bootstrapped founder, this can get a bit demoralizing. To know that you have the design and spec sheet ready for but you just can't afford it. I guess that's life though :)
But on the flip side, being a non-technical founder also can have it's advantages. You end up being much more deliberate with product development and rely on a lot of user testing and data to justify all your decisions. At the end of the day, you're paying for it out of pocket, and building silly features that don't move the needle stings. It also puts the fire on your ass to make more money. Nobody is going to come and save you, you have to save yourself. You want to build that new feature? Figure out a way to sell 100 new subscriptions!
In hindsight, my worst mistake was probably flying the team out to San Francisco for the StartupGrind conference. It's not cheap to fly 4 people to San Francisco for a week, but the worst part was that I had to miss one of my best friend's wedding to attend it. Sure, we got some great photos and made some solid connections, but overall was it worth it? I guess time will tell. On the flip side, I got the chance to see first hand how unattractive the whole groveling for VC money scene is. I don't know if I'd be so strongly footed in the #bootstrapped camp as I am now if I hadn't seen that with my own two eyes.
‍

If you had the chance to do things differently, what would you do?

If I could talk to my former self before GrowthMentor I'd tell him to not stress out so much. Everything's going to work out. Spend more time in the sun, play more basketball, take those Sundays off and just hangout and stuff.
I'd also tell him to completely scratch those "at scale" outbound campaigns I had planned but never actually executed. That was such a waste of time. Let's be honest, how long does it take to send five super personalized and high-impact emails per day? Maybe an hour on day 1, but as time passes, you'll get faster and faster since you will be building up a big repo of templates, by month two you'll probably be able to do 10 per day. That's 300 emails per month to hyper relevant people that can become strategic partners and who knows, maybe even friends down the road!
I know that outbound at scale has its place, I'm actually planning a few campaigns now, but at that early stage, it just wasn't a good fit. It's something I wish I knew earlier on.
‍

What are some sources for learning you would recommend for entrepreneurs who are just starting?

Shameless plug, visit GrowthMentor and book a call with a growth mentor. And don't worry, they're all super friendly. We have a strict "No Jerks Allowed" policy. We're pretty serious about that. As an early stage entrepreneur that's just getting started, having a chat with a seasoned startup warrior is like going into a time machine through the eyes of someone else.
Regards to books, podcasts, etc. different strokes for different folks I guess. There's just so much great content out there that I'm not sure how to even answer this. I guess I'll just shoot out my favorite podcast which is the thestartupchat, and if you want to learn content marketing, check out the blog GrowAndConvert (Benji's also a mentor on the platform), it's top notch.
Final note, be mindful to prioritize active learning vs. passive learning. It's so easy to waste valuable time mindlessly consuming information that you'll never actually use. You probably know enough already to really put a dent in this world. Go forth and create! You got this!
